Amazon Associates is the world's largest affiliate marketing program and the first stop for most beginners — and for good reason. With hundreds of millions of products, instant name recognition, and a conversion rate boosted by Amazon Prime membership, it's a natural starting point. Here's everything you need to know before you build a business around it.
How Amazon Associates Works
Amazon Associates is Amazon's affiliate program, available at affiliate-program.amazon.com. You apply with your website, YouTube channel, or social media profile, get approved (usually within 24–48 hours), and receive access to affiliate links for any product on Amazon.
When someone clicks your affiliate link and purchases within Amazon's attribution window, you earn a percentage of the sale price. If they add other items to their cart during that session and purchase those too, you earn commissions on those items as well — even if you didn't specifically link to them.
Amazon Associates Commission Rates (2026)
Commission rates vary dramatically by product category:
- Amazon Games: 20%
- Luxury Beauty: 10%
- Music and Digital: 5%
- Physical Books: 4.5%
- Kitchen and Housewares: 4.5%
- Automotive: 4.5%
- Home and Garden: 3%
- Computers and Electronics: 2.5%
- Grocery: 1%
- Gift Cards, Wine: 0%
The 2020 rate cuts reduced commissions in several categories by 50–80%. This is the most important thing to understand about Amazon Associates: rates can change with zero notice, and they have a history of moving downward.
The 24-Hour Cookie: The Critical Limitation
Amazon's affiliate cookie lasts just 24 hours from the initial click. If someone clicks your link, leaves, and comes back three days later to buy, you earn nothing. This is dramatically shorter than most other affiliate programs (HubSpot: 90 days, SEMrush: 120 days, Rakuten: 30 days).
One exception: if a customer adds a product to their cart via your link, the cookie extends to 90 days — but only for that specific item in the cart.
The practical implication: Amazon affiliate content needs to target buyers who are ready to purchase now, not just browsing. Reviews and "best of" lists work better than informational how-to content for driving Amazon affiliate income.
Content That Converts Best with Amazon Associates
- "Best [product] for [specific use case]" — High purchase intent, easy to rank in long-tail searches
- "[Product A] vs [Product B]: Which Should You Buy?" — Captures people at the final decision stage
- "[Product] Review: Worth It After X Months of Use" — Authentic long-term reviews convert extremely well
- Gift guides — Seasonal traffic that converts at high rates around major holidays
- Buying guides — "What to Look For When Buying a [Product]" — establishes authority, then links to specific recommendations
💡 Amazon converts so well that even its relatively low commission rates can generate good income at scale. A blog earning 3% on $100,000/month in Amazon sales earns $3,000/month — equivalent to a 30% commission on a $10,000/month SaaS product. Volume matters as much as rate.
The Risk of Relying Solely on Amazon
Many affiliate marketers have built entire businesses on Amazon Associates only to have their income cut 30–50% overnight when Amazon reduced commission rates. Always pair Amazon links with direct merchant programs in the same niche for the same products. Often, manufacturers offer their own affiliate programs with higher commission rates (5–15%) and longer cookies.
Calculating Your Amazon Affiliate Potential
Use our Revenue Calculator to model Amazon affiliate income. Set your commission rate based on your primary product category, and adjust your AOV to reflect the typical Amazon purchase price in your niche. The tool will show you exactly how many monthly visitors you need to hit your income goals at Amazon's current rates.
For comparison, run the same numbers with a direct merchant's affiliate program at 8–12% commission and a 30-day cookie — the difference is often significant enough to change your strategy.
