The WordPress.org software is a very stripped down, basic program. If you want to install ads, track users, or do a number of things other than simply write posts, you’ll need to install plugins. When I was trying to install a new theme for my WordPress.org sites (for example, the site you’re looking at now) the only instructions that I could find were “upload it to your wp-content folder and extract it”. The problem was, I couldn’t find the folder! More than that, once I was able to find the folder for my main site (yet to be built), it didn’t automatically install on all of my WordPress accounts. HostGator even has a program called Fantastico to do it for you!
I figure others may have the same problem that I had, and so I’m doing a series of basic steps that I took to get my sites up and running.
#1- Follow the link in your welcome email from HostGator that opens your CPanel and sign in.
#2- You’re now looking at CPanel. Scroll to the bottom of the icons and look towards the right. You should see a blue smiley face labeled Fantastico De Luxe. Click this icon. (more…)
