Having a high rank at Squidoo won’t likely influence your traffic much, but it does lend your lens an air of authority that you might not other wise have. While I’m not an expert, I have been using Squidoo for a year or so, and have learned quite a bit by reading up on it and experimenting.

1. Garner links and traffic. This is rather obvious since having quality links and a lot of traffic will raise your rankings anywhere. But it is necessary to point it out as many people think getting their lens ranked well in search engines is enough. It’s not. A good search engine ranking will help pump traffic your way, but it’s not enough to push your lens above similar lenses by others.

2. Build a thorough lens.

Many lens masters put up one or two modules and let their lens fly. The problem with this is that Squidoo doesn’t see those lenses as being worthwhile no matter how much information is provided. Try splitting your information into at least 3 text or link modules and include one or two shopping modules as well as an RSS feed or other such self updating module. This gives your lens the appearance of being well rounded and useful, even if it isn’t.

3. Ask an Angel.

Squidoo has a group of lens masters who accept requests to rate lenses. While they don’t require their members to rate every request that comes in, even one or two ratings will help your rank rise (remember, you can’t get a rating of less than zero, and that’s what you start with).

4. Ask your friends.

If you have a blog, post a link and ask your readers to take a look and rate it if they like it. This is killing two birds as you’re gaining at least one link (your own) and hopefully a few ratings from fellow lens masters. Every time someone rates one of my blogs, the rank shoots up for several days.

5. Sell something.

Obviously, you can’t make people buy from you. But if you know someone who’s about to make a purchase from, say, Amazon, you can ask them to access Amazon via your Amazon module on your Squidoo lens. Whenever someone makes a purchase from one of my lenses, the rank shoots straight up. It only lasts for a few days, but that lens does tend to float a bit higher ever after. I’ve heard of people making purchases themselves through their own lenses, but I’d check Amazon’s and Squidoo’s Terms Of Service before doing that. If it violates TOS, it’s not worth taking the chance.

6. Update constantly.

If you have the time and inclination, you can keep your content “fresh” by updating on a daily basis. This is not an easy way to attain and maintain high rank, but it can work. Particularly if you add content often rather than simply change it out.

7. Don’t update constantly.

In the beginning, I thought that I had to update on a nearly daily basis just to maintain a decent rank. And then I got busy. What I noticed was that after a week or so, my rank dropped dramatically. But, after another week or so, my rank came back to almost as high as it was when I was constantly updating. And it stayed there. I have lenses that I haven’t updated in almost 2 months, but their rank is more or less where it was just after updating. Also, my rank usually tanks for a day or so after an update before it rises again. Adding a self updating RSS feed module can help keep content fresh while not penalizing your lens during the update period.

For why I build websites with WordPress, follow the link.1. WordPress can be set up in less than 5 minutes once you know how. The first time you set up a WordPress site, it will take considerably longer as you search for templates and plugins and learn where to put what. Once you have all of the features you want downloaded however, it’s just a matter of uploading, extracting, and activating everything. No matter how many sites you build with it.

2. No having to upload ftp files for each individual page. With WordPress themes, you can set it and forget it- only involving yourself with adding content and keeping up with comments (which can be turned off). HostGator and a few other web hosts have programs to automatically set up WordPress accounts for your domains.

3. Blogs get crawled and indexed in search engines faster than normal websites. Even if you’re building a static website using the “pages” function, the search engines only see that it’s on a blog platform. My google alerts often notify me of my posts within a day- sometimes within the hour.

4. You can use different themes/templates for different pages of your WordPress site. All you have to do is upload the new themes, and choose a different theme when writing your new page.

Approximately 1 year ago, I launched a brand new website for music reviews that I wrote. It was a labor of love. I never expected it to be a hit, but I really wanted to spread word about some great bands that most people never heard of. I didn’t know a thing about html, and so I knew I needed a site builder.Everything had changed since the last time I’d built a personal website (late ’90’s) and I didn’t know where to start. Some friends had used GoDaddy, and so I went with them, and bought their Website Tonight program. Ye gods, it was terrible. Slow, glitchy, and not the easiest thing to find your way around. They had great customer service though, so I persevered and was eventually rewarded with a much better page building interface.

A few months later I began writing freelance. I really wanted a website to promote my business, but I just couldn’t face the tediousness of building everything from scratch, even with the new, improved interface. So I put it off.

Down the road, I had more ideas. A craft site. An affiliate site. Even a Christmas site, along with a few others that I’d shelved months earlier. But I couldn’t afford seperate hosting on each site, and pay for the site builder. At least not until they began turning a profit.

So I looked into a free html editor thinking that I could just bypass the site builder. But I couldn’t make heads or tails of it, and it didn’t come with an instruction manual. Around the same time, a few friends were talking about HostGator and how they all had the “baby” plan. For $7.95 a month they had unlimited domain hosting. Granted, if you have high levels of traffic, you’d have to upgrade. But for me, it was a dream come true. I didn’t even know if I’d get one visitor, and if I got high enough traffic, I’d be more than happy to upgrade.

So I got a HostGator hosting account, and registered a few domains with GoDaddy (I know where to find good coupons for even lower prices than they list). But I still didn’t have a website to go with the domains and hosting.

I kept looking around. Several of my freelance friends had great, professional websites. When I asked for advice, there was an instant clamoring for “WordPress”. So I looked into it. For customization, all I had to do was pick a theme I liked out of the thousands of free ones available (the hard part is narrowing down to one). And later, if I changed my mind, or wanted to brand my image- all I had to do was download and install a new theme. The switch is so easy, and content rarely has glitches. Sometimes you have to work on the sidebar though.

But the real clincher for me, was when I found out that HostGator can automatically set up a WordPress account for your domain. I still dream of learning to code my own website, but I’d never have been able to do so much in such a short amount of time using anything else.

So. You’ve set up your WordPress blog, played around with a few free themes and found a few plugins you like. You’ve developed a bit of a following, but now you’d like something a little more professional or unique than that World of Warcraft theme.

Now, you have a huge number of choices here. You can hire a professional WordPress theme designer. That’ll run you around $1500 for a good theme. You can take a free theme and tweak it. Some themes are easier to tweak than others, and you’ll probably need to know how to code in html, php, and css. You can find a designer of free WordPress themes and bargain with the designer. Or, you can go to Template Monster and search through the themes they offer.

WordPress theme designers upload their themes to Template Monster’s website and set a price. Currently, the lowest price for general use is $45, but new themes are uploaded constantly and you may find an even better deal. In addition, themes that have not yet been purchased often have an option to buy that theme exclusively (meaning, no one else can buy it and use it), often for as low as $400-$600. That’s much cheaper than commissioning a theme, though less customizable.

If you like the range of offers, but not any specific theme, Template Monster even offers a “wishbox” where you can discuss what you’d like to see. While they don’t guarantee that a theme will be released to your specifications, if one is released, they’ll notify you once it’s available.

In all, it’s a great way to give your website a professional look, brand your image, and increase your site rank without a lot of cash.

WordPress.org’s software is extremely customizable, but there isn’t an in depth user manual to let you in to all the little tips and tricks available to you.

While there are a number of plugins available to streamline and customize your advertising possibilities, there are a few things that you can do for yourself. No downloads needed.

Step 1: In your WordPress dashboard, open “presentation”. There’s a toolbar that opens up saying “themes”, “widgets”, and “theme editor”. Open “widgets”.

Step 2: You’re in a screen that says “Sidebar Arrangement”. If you don’t see a box within the sidebar template marked “text” or “text 1″, look below where you’ll see several little boxes that say things like “Meta” and “Pages”. Find the one marked “text” and left click on it. Keep the left mouse button down and drag the box into the sidebar. You can drag and drop any number of items wherever you want them within the sidebar.

Step 3: To the right of the word “text” you’ll see a small box with a blue line at the top and 3 smaller black lines. Click on this to open the editor. If you hover your mouse over the box it should say “configure”. If the editing box doesn’t open, try holding down the “Ctrl” button on your keyboard while clicking the configure box.

Step 4: Paste the HTML code directly into the box. You can type title such as “Afflove Recommends”, or leave the title area blank. Click the X at the top, right corner of the editing box when you’re done. To the right you’ll see a button that says “Save Changes”. Click it.

Step 5: View your page. Do you like where you placed the ad? Did the code turn out correctly? If not, go back and continue editing until your page looks just the way you want it.

This method of inserting ads works with just about any HTML coded ad that’s available. I’ve used it successfully with Adsense, Amazon, and several other affiliate companies. Of course, you’ll need to sign up for an account with each of these in order to get the ad code and get paid.

For more information on building a WordPress website, read my articles on WordPress or < to try WordPress tutorial videos.
